The Organization of American States (OAS) member states are set to vote on June 27 for new commissioners to join the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR). The United States has put forward Rosa María Payá as its nominee for this position.
Rosa María Payá is recognized for her dedication to human rights and democracy. Her leadership and moral clarity, especially in challenging authoritarian regimes and promoting democratic values, align with the core principles of the IACHR. According to a statement from the U.S., "Rosa María brings the dignity and resolve to tackle the Commission’s greatest challenges with innovative solutions all while keeping a focus on serving the people of the Americas."
If she secures a position on the Commission, Payá is expected to serve with independence and integrity. Her role would be crucial in enhancing justice and accountability within the hemisphere. The statement further emphasized that "her voice would strengthen the Commission’s ability to speak out clearly in defense of those facing repression, censorship, and abuse."
The United States has called upon other OAS member states to support Payá's candidacy, stressing the importance of maintaining a strong IACHR that remains committed to defending human rights across the region.
