The United States has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the framework authorized by UN Security Council Resolution 2719. This resolution aims to address threats to peace and security in Africa with innovative solutions backed by sustainable financing.
In a statement at a UNGA High-Level Thematic Debate, the U.S. emphasized the importance of accelerating efforts by the AU and UN 2719 Task Teams to complete a joint roadmap for implementing Resolution 2719. "We encourage the AU and UN 2719 Task Teams to accelerate efforts to complete the joint roadmap for the implementation of Resolution 2719," said the representative.
The first mission under this framework is anticipated as a proof of concept, with proposals reviewed on their individual merits. The U.S. expressed its intent not to support any proposal that could undermine or contradict the established framework: "We will not support proposals that risk undermining the longevity of the tool or that contradict the spirit and word of the framework."
There is an emphasis on mobilizing funding from new donors and partnerships, particularly for missions underfunded by assessed contributions. The U.S. also highlighted African ownership in peace solutions through contributions from the Peace Fund.
The statement underscored accountability and transparency in both UN peacekeeping operations and AU-led Peace Support Operations. It called for clear mandates, evidence-based success indicators, exit strategies, and transition plans to avoid prolonged ineffective approaches.
"We encourage Member States of the AU and the UN to step up," urged the representative, emphasizing collaboration towards effective African-led conflict resolutions under Security Council Resolution 2719.
