Twenty-seven individuals from Pohnpei, Yap, and Kosrae have been sworn into the United States Army during an enlistment ceremony hosted by the U.S. Embassy on June 11, 2025. This event underscores the ongoing partnership between the United States and the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM).
The new enlistees join a long tradition of FSM citizens serving in the U.S. military, with participation in every major U.S. engagement since 1986. Former U.S. Secretary of Defense Richard Cheney previously acknowledged FSM's significant contribution relative to its population size.
U.S. Ambassador Jennifer Johnson addressed those present at the ceremony, emphasizing that these new soldiers are not merely joining a military branch but becoming part of a legacy defined by service and dedication. She highlighted their cultural heritage and community spirit as valuable assets to their military roles.
LTC John Scott, U.S. Army Recruiting Commander, administered the Oath of Enlistment and commended the enlistees for their decision to serve, describing it as "powerful and commendable." He noted that their service demonstrates courage beyond borders and dedication to freedom.
Pohnpei State Governor Stevenson Joseph and Director of FSM Veterans Affairs Hainrick Panuelo also spoke at the event, celebrating this significant milestone for the enlistees.
Other attendees included active U.S. military personnel, embassy staff, family members, and friends who gathered to support and congratulate the new service members as they embark on their military careers.
