Violent protests are occurring in various towns across Kenya, including the Nairobi Central Business District and on Thika Highway. Protestors have clashed with police, who have responded with tear gas and ammunition. Similar protests are taking place in other towns such as Kiambu, Machakos, Eldoret, Nakuru, Kisii, Mombasa, Nyeri, Nanyuki, Meru, and Homa Bay. Police checkpoints have been established at numerous locations.
U.S. citizens in Kenya are advised to avoid protests and crowds. They should monitor local media for updates and keep vehicle doors locked and windows rolled up. It is recommended to notify friends and family of one's whereabouts and safety while reviewing personal security plans. Carrying a copy of a U.S. passport with a current Kenyan visa is also advised.
