The Hungarian Parliament has enacted a law on March 18, 2025, that impacts public events and assemblies. The new legislation mandates police to prohibit any public gatherings that do not adhere to Section 6/A of the Child Protection Act. This section restricts events portraying "divergence from self-identity corresponding to sex at birth, sex change or homosexuality."
Additionally, the law modifies several related statutes, such as the Law on Misdemeanors, the Right of Assembly Act, and the Facial Image Analysis Register Act. These amendments authorize facial image analysis for identifying individuals at events considered unlawful.
The changes have implications for public Pride marches and similar events in Hungary. Such gatherings may now be banned under the new legal framework. Authorities also have the power to limit other demonstrations violating the Child Protection Act, with participants facing fines up to 500 EUR for engaging in prohibited activities.
U.S. citizens in Hungary are advised by the U.S. Embassy to comply with local laws and stay informed about these developments.
