NAB appoints Pete Steel as group executive for digital initiatives

NAB has announced the appointment of Pete Steel as Group Executive for Digital, Data & Artificial Intelligence. In this new position, Mr. Steel will report to NAB Group Chief Executive Officer Andrew Irvine and lead the bank's digital, data, and AI teams. His responsibilities will include improving customer experiences and overseeing design, customer onboarding, and NAB’s digital bank ubank.

Andrew Irvine emphasized the importance of digital, data, and AI in achieving the bank's strategic goals. "Digital, data and AI are critical enablers for the delivery of our strategic ambition of customer-centricity and now is the right time to have an executive solely accountable and focussed on accelerating our progress in these areas," he stated.

Mr. Steel currently serves as Managing Director of Customer Engagement at Lloyds Banking Group in the UK. He leads a division responsible for consumer sales and service among other areas. His previous experience includes founding fintech startup Expertli and working as a Senior Adviser on digital transformation at Boston Consulting Group. He also held executive roles at CBA for 16 years.

Mr. Steel is set to join NAB on January 5, 2026, pending regulatory approvals and completion of his current role at Lloyds.

Les Matheson will continue his role as Group Chief Operating Officer with responsibilities over several key strategic priorities such as Business-led Technology Modernisation and Customer Experience.
