General Michael Langley, Commander of United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), recently visited Ethiopia to discuss counterterrorism efforts and regional security. This visit followed his trip to Camp Lemonier in Djibouti for the Change of Command ceremony for the Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa (CJTF-HOA). The task force aims to strengthen partner nation capacity, promote stability, deter conflict, and safeguard U.S. and partner interests.
In discussions with Ethiopia's Prime Minister and senior officials, General Langley reiterated AFRICOM’s dedication to supporting Ethiopia's significant role in counterterrorism operations within the Horn of Africa. He stressed that U.S. military involvement in Africa focuses on facilitating African-led solutions, reinforcing effective institutions, and addressing instability's root causes. AFRICOM collaborates closely with African partners against terrorist groups such as al Shabaab and ISIS, which pose threats to both regional and international security. According to General Langley, AFRICOM’s partnership with Ethiopia aligns with a broader strategy aimed at helping African nations develop resilient and self-sufficient security sectors.
During his visit, General Langley also met with Ambassador Selma Malika Haddadi, Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), along with officials from the AUC’s Political Affairs Peace and Security Commission. He emphasized continued U.S. support for the AU's crucial role in promoting peace and security across the region. General Langley addressed escalating security challenges on the continent, including increased terrorist activities in the Sahel region and West Africa’s coastal areas.
