The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad and the Consulate General in Erbil have issued a message for U.S. citizens in Iraq, highlighting a Level 4 Travel Advisory ("Do Not Travel") for the country. This advisory urges U.S. citizens to avoid traveling to Iraq.

For those who must travel, several precautionary actions are recommended. These include avoiding large gatherings, keeping communication lines open with family and friends, enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), and preparing an emergency plan by reviewing the Traveler’s Checklist.

Travelers should also stay informed by following updates from the Department of State on social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter/X, visiting travel.state.gov, and checking local media for any breaking events that may require adjustments to their plans.

For those traveling via land borders, the borders with Kuwait and Türkiye remain open but may experience long wait times. Travelers entering Türkiye should send their travel details and passport information to the U.S. Embassy Ankara American Citizens Services Unit at Ankara-ACS@state.gov. Similarly, travelers entering Kuwait should send their details to the U.S. Embassy Kuwait American Citizens Services Unit at KuwaitACS@state.gov.

The Habur border gate (Ibrahim Khalil on the Iraq side) is operating normally while the Uzumlu border gate (Sar Zeri on the Iraq side) is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., though delays are expected.

The embassy will continue providing necessary updates as needed while routine visa services are temporarily suspended; consular services for U.S. citizens remain available.
