Carla Fleharty Deputy Chief of Mission | U.S. Embassy in Nicaragua

Effective June 17, 2025, Nicaragua has introduced new national speed limits. Cars, trucks, and SUVs are now restricted to a maximum speed of 50 km/h (31 mph), while motorcycles have a lower limit of 40 km/h (25 mph). Additionally, children are no longer allowed as passengers on motorcycles.

The U.S. Embassy in Managua advises that road signage may not yet display these changes. However, the new speed limits are in effect at all times regardless of posted signs. Drivers should adjust their speeds accordingly.

For further information on consular services for U.S. citizens in Nicaragua, individuals can contact the U.S. Embassy located at Km 5 ½ C. Sur Managua. During business hours, emergencies can be reported by calling +505-2252-7161 from Monday to Thursday between 7:15 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., and on Friday until 2:00 p.m. After-hours emergencies should be directed to +505-2252-7100 where callers can ask for the Embassy Duty Officer.
