Gautam Rana Ambassador | U.S. Embassy in Slovakia

Ambassador Gautam Rana, representing the United States Embassy in Slovakia, addressed guests at an Independence Day celebration marking the 249th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. The event was attended by Slovak Deputy Prime Ministers Peter Kmec, Robert Kaliňák, Denisa Saková, and ministers Samuel Migaľ and Richard Takáč.

In his remarks, Ambassador Rana highlighted the significance of this year for Europe as it marks the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. He noted that during this global conflict, "the United States played a pivotal role in securing victory and rebuilding peace," emphasizing the sacrifices made by Americans and Allies to defend liberty.

Rana recounted historical efforts such as the Lend-Lease program initiated before Pearl Harbor's attack, which provided over $50 billion worth of supplies to allies. He quoted President Franklin Roosevelt from 1941: “We are putting forth our energies, our resources and our organizing powers to give you the strength to regain and maintain a free world.”

The ambassador paid tribute to three individuals who symbolize the bond between Slovakia and America: Maria Gulovich, Andrej Babjak, and Michal Strenk. He stated their stories "remind us that freedom is not the birthright of any one nation."

Rana also acknowledged post-war challenges faced by Eastern Europe under Soviet influence. Despite these challenges, he praised Slovakia's progress since emerging from oppression over three decades ago. He commended Slovakia for becoming a NATO member and valued U.S. partner.

The ongoing conflict on Slovakia’s border was addressed with calls for unconditional peace. Rana expressed appreciation for Ukraine's efforts towards achieving peace.

Concluding his speech, Ambassador Rana encouraged attendees to draw strength from past sacrifices while celebrating shared freedoms between the United States and Slovakia.

"Tonight we celebrate more than just a nation," he said. "We celebrate the enduring bond between the United States and Slovakia—two proud nations who know what it means to fight for liberty."
