The U.S. Embassy in Kuala Lumpur has announced the appointment of two Malaysian students, Rakis Ruhaim bin Abdul Rahman and Luthfil Haikal bin Haswadi, to prestigious U.S. military service academies. This development is seen as a reflection of the strong defense partnership between the United States and Malaysia.
Cadet Rakis Ruhaim will join the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, while Cadet Luthfil Haikal will attend the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York, both as part of the Class of 2029.
“These young cadets represent the future of our nations — leaders who will uphold our militaries’ common commitment to discipline, service, and cooperation,” stated U.S. Ambassador to Malaysia Edgard D. Kagan. “Their selection is a testament to the enduring U.S.-Malaysia Comprehensive Partnership, especially in the areas of defense and security.”
The selection process for these appointments was highly competitive, taking into account academic performance, leadership potential, and physical fitness. The certificates of appointment were presented by Ambassador Kagan during a ceremony attended by Major General Dato’ Ts. Reizal Arif bin Tan Sri Ismail from the Malaysian Armed Forces.
Ambassador Kagan also recognized Officer Cadet Mohamad Khairel Adha bin Mohd Khairee for his recent graduation from the U.S. Air Force Academy.
Since 1971, 40 Malaysian students have graduated from U.S. service academies, contributing significantly to global security and strengthening ties between Malaysia and the United States.
Luthfil Haikal's journey began with an early interest in defense and geopolitics while growing up in Dungun, Terengganu. He excelled academically with top grades in his SPM exams and received several awards for his achievements in academics and extracurricular activities.
Rakis Ruhaim comes from a background rich in leadership experiences gained during his time at Royal Military College where he excelled both academically and athletically. His naval training included time at Mürwik Naval Academy in Germany where he participated in multinational operations.
Both cadets have demonstrated exceptional abilities that align with their aspirations to contribute meaningfully to their respective fields within military service.
