U.S. citizens currently in Iran are advised to leave the country immediately due to increasing regional tensions, according to a security alert issued by the U.S. government. The alert emphasizes that those unable to depart should be prepared for extended periods of sheltering in place.

The U.S. government lacks diplomatic or consular relations with Iran, and the Swiss Embassy in Tehran acts as the protecting power for U.S. interests there. However, "the Swiss Protecting Power office in Tehran is closed until further notice and is limited in its ability to assist U.S. citizens."

As of June 16, Iranian airspace remains closed, prompting travelers to verify their plans with airlines if they intend to leave by air.

For those considering land travel:

- The Armenian border at Agarak is open.

- Turkish borders at Gürbulak, Kapiköy, and Esendere are also open.

- Azerbaijan's borders remain closed except for potential entry at Astara with special authorization facilitated by the U.S. Embassy Baku.

- Turkmenistan’s borders are open but require special authorization from its government, coordinated through the U.S. Embassy Ashgabat.

"The U.S. government cannot guarantee your safety if you choose to depart using these options," the alert warns.

In case of emergencies or assistance needs, affected individuals can contact the Department of State via email or phone numbers provided in the alert.

Actions recommended include leaving Iran promptly without relying on U.S. government aid, securing a safe location if unable to leave, maintaining communication lines with family and friends, enrolling in relevant programs like STEP for updates and alerts, and preparing an emergency plan.

U.S. citizens are encouraged to follow developments through local media and adjust their plans accordingly while staying informed via official channels such as Facebook and Twitter/X from the Department of State.
