The U.S. Consulate General in Monterrey, in partnership with the National Football League (NFL) and USA Football, has initiated a series of flag football clinics as part of the Department of State’s Sports Envoy program. This initiative aims to strengthen ties between the United States and Mexico through sports.

The event took place at Club Avispones and involved over 700 Mexican youth aged 9 to 14 from various educational institutions. The three-day clinics are led by Vanita Krouch, renowned as the most decorated female flag football player globally, and Cecil Shorts III, a former NFL wide receiver now focused on mentoring youth.

Consul General Melissa Bishop emphasized the role of sports in fostering mutual understanding and personal growth: “We are proud to launch this program here in Monterrey, a city with a strong tradition in flag football. With the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, these types of initiatives not only promote teamwork and youth leadership but also strengthen the ties between our communities,” she stated.

This marks the first visit by Sports Envoys to Monterrey centered on flag football, positioning the city as an important center for sports diplomacy ahead of major events like the 2026 World Cup and the 2028 Olympic Games, where flag football will debut as an Olympic sport.

The clinics aim to instill core values such as discipline, respect, and perseverance. Both Krouch and Shorts III will share their experiences through motivational talks designed to inspire young athletes.

The U.S. Consulate expressed gratitude towards Club Avispones and local partners for their support of Monterrey's youth.

The U.S. Department of State’s Sports Diplomacy program uses sports to foster international understanding and cooperation. Through initiatives like Sports Envoys, it engages global athletes and youth in cultural exchanges and community-building activities.

Vanita Krouch is celebrated for her achievements in flag football since beginning her career in 2006. She has led USA Football’s Women’s National Flag Football Team to numerous victories internationally. Cecil Shorts III transitioned from quarterback to wide receiver during his college years at Mount Union University, achieving significant success before moving into mentorship roles post-NFL career.
