Academics from the University of Cambridge have been acknowledged in the King's Birthday Honours 2025 for their significant contributions to various fields. Among those recognized is Professor Emily Shuckburgh, Director of Cambridge Zero and a Fellow of Darwin College, who has been awarded a CBE for her services to climate science and public communication.

"I am deeply honoured to accept this recognition, which is a reflection of the collective efforts of many scientists, communicators, educators, and advocates who strive every day to make climate science accurate, accessible and actionable at a time when honesty, clarity and urgency are more important than ever,” Professor Shuckburgh stated.

Professor Shuckburgh leads Cambridge Zero, the university's major climate change initiative. She also serves as Professor of Environmental Data Science at the Department of Computer Science and Technology. Her research focuses on applying AI to climate science. She holds roles as Academic Director at the Institute of Computing for Climate Science and co-Director at the UKRI Centre for Doctoral Training on AI applications in environmental risks (AI4ER).

Another honoree is Professor Gordon Dougan, an Emeritus Professor affiliated with Wolfson College. He has received a CBE for his contributions to vaccines and global health. Prof Dougan is renowned in vaccinology and global health sectors. His career includes leading roles such as Head of Pathogens at The Wellcome Sanger Institute and working within the pharmaceutical industry with Wellcome Foundation/GSK.

Prof Dougan expressed his gratitude: “I am delighted to receive this important recognition for my work and the people I have worked with and for. Applying science to the benefit of people and health is what I have been working toward throughout my career. I can recommend this path to anyone.”

The University will publish details about alumni recognized in these honours on its website www.alumni.cam.ac.uk. Congratulations are extended by the University to all academics, staff, and alumni who have received an honour.
