Ambassador Chung addressed attendees at the inaugural Cotton USA Leadership Roundtable, organized by Cotton Council International (CCI) and the Joint Apparel Association Forum (JAAF). The event was held in Sri Lanka, with key figures such as JAAF Chairman Saif Jafferjee and representatives from CCI present.
In his remarks, Ambassador Chung highlighted the long-standing tagline of the U.S. cotton industry: “The Touch, the Feel of Cotton, the Fabric of Our Lives.” He emphasized its recognition and success since 1989. He also noted that 73% of consumers prefer cotton fabric, with a significant number willing to pay more for natural fabrics like cotton due to perceived higher quality.
The United States leads globally in cotton exports, accounting for about 35% of worldwide exports. The country is known for producing high-quality cotton varieties including upland and Pima cotton. Ambassador Chung mentioned that U.S. cotton has seen a substantial increase in exports to South Asia over the past decade.
To maintain quality standards, the U.S. employs regulation and industry monitoring programs that ensure rigorous testing and certification processes are met before products reach consumers. Sustainability is another focus area for American cotton farmers who adopt advanced technologies to minimize environmental impact while maintaining product quality.
Looking ahead, the U.S. cotton industry aims to innovate by developing new products like performance fabrics with moisture-wicking and antimicrobial properties. Ambassador Chung expressed a desire for Sri Lanka's textile sector to partner with this vision due to its growing reputation for high-quality clothing production.
Concluding his speech, Ambassador Chung reiterated the commitment of the U.S. cotton industry to quality, reliability, innovation, environmental protection, and community support.
