The U.S. Army and Romanian Land Forces have conducted a joint river crossing as part of Saber Guardian 25, an annual security cooperation exercise under NATO's Eastern Flank. This event took place on June 13 in Frecatei, Tulcea County, Romania. The exercise involved the 7th Engineer Brigade and the 4th Romanian Division performing a wet gap crossing over the Danube River.
This operation is part of a broader effort by the U.S. Army to enhance readiness and improve integration among multinational combat forces. "The United States and Romania’s shared NATO responsibilities protect our citizens, defend our territory, and safeguard our freedom and democracy," said U.S. Chargé d’affaires Michael Dickerson. He added that such joint exercises strengthen security partnerships and ensure NATO Allies are prepared for real-world challenges.
General Vlad Gheorghiță, Chief of Defense Staff, emphasized Romania's commitment to NATO's deterrence and defense posture on the Eastern Flank. "Saber Guardian 25 reaffirms the Romanian Armed Forces’ ability to operate seamlessly with our allies," he stated.
The 7th Engineer Brigade is unique as it is the only European-based engineer brigade within the U.S. Army's 21st Theater Sustainment Command, leading engineering activities across Europe. Approximately 200 U.S. engineers participated alongside about 400 Romanians and 100 Italians in this complex multinational exercise.
Saber Guardian 25 is part of DEFENDER 25, which involves around 25,000 troops from 29 allied and partner countries aimed at enhancing rapid deployment capabilities for joint operations. The exercise runs from June 9 to June 24, taking place in Czechia, Hungary, and Romania with participation from approximately 10,000 forces from six nations.
Activities in Saber Guardian include tactical movements, multiple river crossings, and live-fire exercises in Romania. Prior to DEFENDER25, USAREUR-AF Band & Chorus engaged in music performances across several Romanian counties.
