The U.S. Embassy in Lusaka, Zambia, has issued a health alert regarding acute heavy metal poisoning for U.S. citizens near the Sino Metals Leach Mine in Chambishi and surrounding areas. The warning follows the collapse of a tailings dam at the mine on February 18, 2025, which resulted in the release of 50 million liters of acidic and toxic waste into local waterways.

The incident has reportedly led to widespread occurrences of dead fish and illnesses among residents along the Mwambashi stream and Kafue River ecosystem. Symptoms associated with acute heavy metal poisoning have been observed, according to public reports.

The embassy advises avoiding the area around the Sino Metals Leach Mine, particularly downstream regions along the Mwambashi stream and Kafue River for a distance of at least 24 kilometers (15 miles). It is also recommended to avoid using river water within 100 kilometers (62 miles) from the spill site and all natural water sources within a 20-kilometer radius of the mine. Safe drinking water should be used exclusively as boiling does not remove heavy metals; distillation may reduce their presence.

Additionally, it is advised not to consume fish from or likely affected by these waters until further notice. Individuals are encouraged to consult local fish advisories for updates on food safety.

Those concerned about potential symptoms should speak with medical care providers. The embassy provides contact information for assistance:
