President José Ramos-Horta of Timor-Leste, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MAF), the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), has launched a new initiative aimed at enhancing food security, nutrition, and resilience to crises in Timor-Leste. This project is supported by a $4 million contribution from USAID.

The initiative, titled "Transforming agri-food systems to enhance food security, nutrition, and resilience to crises in Timor-Leste," aims to improve food production efficiency, access to markets for farmers, and availability of nutritious foods. The goal is to support Timor-Leste's shift towards resilient and sustainable agri-food systems that emphasize efficient, inclusive, and nutrition-focused value chains.

Running from October 2022 until September 2024, the project targets farmers and households across various regions including Aileu, Ainaro, Baucau, Bobonaro, Covalima, Ermera, Lautem, Manatuto, Manufahi, and Viqueque. Special attention will be given to pregnant women and children under five years old.

Gillian Caldwell, USAID Chief Climate Officer stated: “The United States is proud to provide $4 million in new funding through USAID to help the Timorese people weather the greatest food security crisis of our time.” She highlighted that these resources are intended to protect families from a worsening food crisis linked to global events such as the war in Ukraine while also working towards long-term solutions for food security and nutrition.

The launch event was attended by notable figures including Secretary of State for Fisheries Elidio de Araujo; U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Thomas Daley; USAID Mission Director Zema Semunegus; UN Resident Coordinator Funmi Balogun; and FAO Representative for Timor-Leste Rajendra Aryal.

Since 2000, USAID has been active in supporting development initiatives in Timor-Leste with over $323 million invested towards fostering inclusive growth. Meanwhile, FAO has been present since 2012 following an invitation by then-President Ramos Horta. Their efforts focus on improving agriculture sustainability along with enhancing economic opportunities while managing natural resources sustainably amidst climate change challenges.
