Kristin M. Kane, the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary in the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Global Public Affairs, has concluded a three-day official visit to Timor-Leste. The visit highlighted the enduring partnership between the United States and Timor-Leste, emphasizing shared democratic values.
During her stay, Kane met with key government officials, including Minister of Education Dulce de Jesus Soares and representatives from the office of the Secretary of State for Equality and Inclusion. She expressed congratulations on behalf of the U.S. Government to Timor-Leste for its recent accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO), noting it as a significant milestone supported by the United States that enhances bilateral relations and opens new economic collaboration opportunities.
Kane expressed optimism about future cooperation with Timor-Leste, highlighting U.S. support for its ASEAN membership aspirations, English-language programs, and development aid in agriculture, clean water access, and sustainable tourism. She stated: “Cultural exchanges and diplomatic engagements strengthen our nations’ bonds and foster mutual growth. I commend Timor-Leste on its successful accession to the WTO, progress toward ASEAN membership, and its dedication to meeting its MCC Compact commitments." She added that "the United States stands ready to support Timor-Leste’s development goals.”
The U.S. commitment includes enhancing border and maritime security capabilities and collaborating on humanitarian efforts and infrastructure projects like Baucau Airfield's rehabilitation.
In addition to diplomatic engagements, Kane participated in Earth Day 2024 events by touring the Timor Coffee Cooperative in Ermera, meeting YSEALI alumni focused on environmental issues, and visiting Caltech Recycling facilities in Dili.
