Donna Ann Welton has completed her service as the U.S. Ambassador to Timor-Leste, stepping down in anticipation of her retirement after a lengthy career in public service. Deputy Chief of Mission Marc A. Weinstock has taken over as Chargé d’affaires.
Ambassador Welton was confirmed by the U.S. Congress on May 7, 2024, and presented her credentials to the President of Timor-Leste on July 16, 2024. During her tenure, she actively promoted the U.S.-Timor-Leste bilateral relationship, strengthening diplomatic ties based on mutual respect and partnership between the two nations.
Welton's commitment extended beyond formal duties; she sought a deeper understanding of the Timorese people by learning Tetum and traveling across all 13 municipalities. Her travels included diverse modes such as Cessna flights, four-wheel drives, and chartered boats. She engaged with various segments of society from government officials to community leaders and schoolchildren.
The Ambassador's efforts brought the United States closer to Timor-Leste through initiatives like visiting cultural sites supported by U.S. grants, enhancing security cooperation with the Rhode Island National Guard, networking with young leaders at her residence, and launching a Business Incubator aimed at empowering young Timorese.
Ambassador Welton's departure marks the end of her diplomatic career.
