The United States has extended its congratulations to Timor-Leste on joining the World Trade Organization (WTO). The achievement marks the culmination of over seven years of processes and negotiations.
The U.S. Government has been a consistent supporter of Timor-Leste's efforts to join the WTO, providing assistance through various USAID initiatives. Notably, the USAID Trade Governance Activity has helped modernize Timor-Leste's trade system to align with international standards. Efforts have also included enhancing transparency via the Customs Trade Portal.
"The United States congratulates Timor-Leste on joining the WTO, a milestone on its path to becoming a more strategic global partner," said Marc Weinstock, U.S. Embassy Dili Chargé d’Affaires.
"Timor-Leste’s accession to the WTO is a testament to its dedication and perseverance. USAID stands alongside Timor-Leste, supporting its journey towards a more open, connected, and prosperous future," added Mark White, USAID Interim Mission Director.
Post-accession support from the U.S., through USAID, will continue for Timor-Leste's Customs Authority by aiding in amending the Customs Code in compliance with the WTO Trade Facilitation Agreement and establishing a National Enquiry Point.
Additionally, USAID has backed the development of four bills driven by WTO requirements aimed at advancing Timor-Leste’s telecommunications sector. These laws are intended to attract investment in ICT-related areas and accommodate growth in ICT-driven services.
