On September 16, 2024, the Department of State introduced a new version of the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). This updated platform requires users to re-enroll at step.state.gov to continue receiving alerts.
The revised STEP system integrates with login.gov accounts, allowing users to customize their subscriptions and receive email alerts specific to countries during selected timeframes. Users can enroll multiple trips or locations simultaneously and have the flexibility to modify subscriptions or unenroll whenever necessary.
According to the Department of State, "Enrolling in STEP makes it easier for the nearest U.S embassy or consulate to contact you during an emergency and send you safety and security alerts." The department strongly encourages all U.S. citizens traveling or residing abroad to take advantage of this new functionality by enrolling or re-enrolling.
To ensure continued receipt of alerts and messages from the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate, individuals are advised to visit step.state.gov and set their preferences. Additionally, travelers are encouraged to inform friends and family living internationally about enrolling in STEP. Alerts can be tailored for individual trips or long-term stays in specific countries where they or their loved ones may be visiting or residing.
The Department of State also suggests following its Bureau of Consular Affairs on social media (@travelgov) as well as the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate for further updates.
