Papua New Guinea is currently under a Level 3 Travel Advisory, advising travelers to reconsider their plans. Certain areas such as Central Bougainville and the Highlands Region (excluding Mt. Hagen and Goroka) are classified as Level 4, indicating a recommendation not to travel there.
In Port Moresby, specific areas require heightened caution according to the Level 3 Travel Advisory. These areas include Gerehu Stage 6, Morata Area, 9-Mile Area, Erima Area and the Kumul Flyover Underpass, Koura Highway in the Tokorara Area, Hohola Area, Boroko/Korobosea area particularly at Taurama Rd/Gavamani Rd bus stop, Badili and Gabutu Area, Koki Market Area, Poreporena and Hanuabada Villages.
The embassy emphasizes maintaining good situational awareness and following security recommendations to reduce the risk of becoming a crime victim. Recommendations include keeping a low profile, being aware of surroundings, using alarms consistently for homes and vehicles, exercising caution during night travel or walks, keeping vehicle doors locked with windows up while driving or parked items concealed.
Travelers are advised not to display signs of wealth such as expensive jewelry or watches and not to physically resist any robbery attempts. Reviewing personal security plans and ensuring travel documents are up-to-date is also recommended.
