U.S. official visits South Korea to discuss alliance modernization

Senior Bureau Official Sean O’Neill from the East Asian and Pacific Affairs Bureau visited Seoul, Republic of Korea, from June 12 to June 14. During his visit, he engaged with senior officials from the Republic of Korea (ROK) to reinforce the strong alliance between the United States and ROK.

O'Neill emphasized the U.S. commitment to defending ROK and highlighted the importance of advancing the modernization of their alliance. The discussions focused on shared economic and security objectives, particularly in tackling regional threats.

"While in Seoul, SBO O’Neill met with senior ROK officials to reaffirm the strength of the U.S.-ROK Alliance and the U.S. commitment to the defense of the ROK," stated an official note.

He also pointed out "the need to make further progress in modernizing the alliance around a set of shared economic and security goals."
