The United States, represented by Chargé d’Affaires Howard Solomon, addressed the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors in Vienna on June 11, 2025. The statement was made concerning agenda item 6d, which focuses on nuclear verification and the application of safeguards in North Korea.
In his remarks, Solomon aligned the U.S. position with comments from the Canadian Ambassador on behalf of the DPRK Core Group. He also highlighted additional points specific to the United States' national perspective.
"The United States appreciates the sustained efforts of the IAEA Director General and the Secretariat to monitor the deeply troubling developments with respect to the DPRK’s unlawful nuclear program," said Solomon. He emphasized support for IAEA's readiness to conduct monitoring and verification activities in North Korea if required.
The statement expressed serious concerns about North Korea's ongoing nuclear activities, specifically mentioning "the threat of a seventh nuclear test" and what was described as "persistent irresponsible and bellicose rhetoric."
Solomon noted that North Korea's advancement of its weapons programs violates several UN Security Council resolutions and poses a threat not only to America but also to its allies and regional security. "We continue to consult closely with the Republic of Korea, Japan, and others to deter DPRK aggression," he stated, affirming a commitment to pursuing complete denuclearization in North Korea.
The meeting underscored international vigilance over North Korea's nuclear ambitions and reaffirmed collaborative efforts among nations to address these challenges through diplomatic channels.
