On June 10, 2025, Secretary of State Marco Rubio extended congratulations to the people of Portugal on behalf of the United States in celebration of the Day of Portugal, Camões, and the Portuguese Communities.

In his message, Secretary Rubio highlighted Portugal's role as a committed NATO ally. "As a committed NATO Ally, Portugal has an important role in advancing transatlantic security," he stated. He emphasized the importance of defense spending commitments from NATO allies, saying, "We count on Portugal and all NATO Allies to increase their defense spending commitment to 5 percent of GDP. This commitment is an essential cornerstone of our shared deterrence."

Secretary Rubio also discussed ongoing efforts between the United States and Portugal to enhance economic and defense cooperation. "We will continue our joint work to expand our economic and defense cooperation, increase trade and investment, and combatting both illegal immigration and organized crime," he said.

He further acknowledged the significant contributions of Portuguese Americans to American society. "With more than 1.3 million Portuguese Americans contributing to every sector of American life, this is a partnership grounded not only in strategic alignment but in human connection," Secretary Rubio remarked.

The statement concluded with a focus on future collaboration between the two nations: "Together, we will keep building a secure and prosperous future for our nations’ future generations."

Marco Rubio signed off as Secretary of State.
