Thank you, Mr. President. And thank you, Special Envoy Julie Bishop, for your insightful briefing. We deeply appreciate your persistence and concerted efforts to bring stakeholders into dialogue to resolve the crisis in Myanmar.
The United States stands in solidarity with Rohingya victims and survivors facing the military regime’s repression and escalating violence.
We remain deeply concerned about reports of forced displacements and atrocities, particularly in Rakhine State. We urge all parties, including the military and the Arakha Army, to prioritize the protection of civilians and respect human life.
The military continues to escape accountability for its atrocities against Rohingya. The military continues to oppress Rohingya; bomb civilians, schools, and houses of worship; and forcibly conscript Rohingya to fight on behalf of those that committed genocide against them.
Internet and other telecommunication shutdowns in Rakhine State and across the country continue to afflict local communities and provide cover for the military’s atrocities. We call on the regime to restore all telecommunication access.
Humanitarian needs are mounting as the military continues to block the delivery of desperately needed emergency aid. We need a long-term sustainable solution so Rohingya might return to their homes in peace.
Meaningful participation of Myanmar opposition groups and the Rohingya community is essential to that end. We must listen to the broadest possible range of Rohingya voices, including those still in Rakhine State, those displaced outside of Myanmar, and those resettled in third countries.
It is critical all stakeholders participate in repatriation consultations, including the Arakha Army, which now controls nearly all of Rakhine State.
We should be clear-eyed: any sustainable solution will require the participation of the full range of stakeholders.
The United States will continue to advance the cause for respect for human life, an end to senseless conflicts, and a restoration of peace, and we urge all Member States to do the same. Thank you.
