The U.S. Embassy in Port of Spain has provided information for individuals in Trinidad and Tobago experiencing issues with their U.S. Social Security retirement benefits. There is no physical Social Security Administration (SSA) office in Trinidad and Tobago; instead, the Regional Federal Benefits Unit (FBU) located in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic handles SSA inquiries.
Individuals can contact the FBU via email at FBU.Santo.Domingo@ssa.gov or by phone at +1 (809) 368-7011 on Mondays and Thursdays between 9:00 am and 12:00 pm.
The SSA team will visit the U.S. Embassy Port of Spain from Tuesday, June 24th to Thursday, June 26th to assist with services. Appointments are available from 8:30 AM to 12:00 PM and from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. To schedule an appointment, individuals should visit https://tt.usembassy.gov/u-s-citizen-services-appointment-system/ and select “Schedule an Appointment for Notary/Other services.” If assistance is needed during the appointment, individuals can email acspos@state.gov with the assistant's name and valid identification number.
Attendees must bring original documents, photocopies of each document required, a valid unexpired identification card, and a photocopy of this identification. Items such as bags, wallets, opaque envelopes, lighters, weapons, and electronic devices are prohibited inside the embassy; however, documents may be brought in clear plastic folders to expedite security screening.
For those applying for Social Security benefits or related services:
- Applicants must provide original and copy of their birth certificate and U.S. passport.
- For auxiliary or survivor’s benefits as a spouse of a deceased beneficiary, original and copy of marriage and death certificates are required.
- For a Social Security number and card application, applicants need to provide original birth certificate copies along with a completed SS-5 form available at https://www.ssa.gov/.
“Proof of life” forms (SSA -7161/ SSA-7162) were mailed this year to recipients whose Social Security Numbers end with digits from 00 through 49 if they have a registered mailing address in Trinidad and Tobago. Benefits may be suspended if these forms are not submitted by the deadline.
