The Embassy of the United States in Lithuania and American Councils for International Education have announced an invitation for Lithuanian high school students to apply for the Future Leaders Exchange (FLEX) program. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, this initiative aims to select talented students from Lithuania to live with an American host family and study at a U.S. high school during the 2024-25 academic year.
The FLEX program was established by the United States Congress in 1992 as a fully funded exchange opportunity for secondary school students. The goal is to foster mutual understanding between citizens of the United States and other countries through cultural exchange. Participants will spend a year living with a host family and attending an American high school.

To qualify, applicants must meet specific criteria: they must hold Lithuanian citizenship, be born between July 15, 2006, and July 15, 2009, currently be enrolled in grade 9 or 10 at a Lithuanian high school, study English at their secondary school, meet U.S. visa requirements, and not have spent more than three months in the U.S. over the past five years.
The scholarship covers round-trip travel from home to the United States, monthly allowances for social activities and personal supplies, placement with a screened host family for one year, enrollment in a U.S. secondary school, orientation activities both before departure and upon return, local community program activities in the U.S., and medical insurance excluding pre-existing conditions and dental care.
Certain costs are not covered by the scholarship: international passport fees, personal expenses beyond those covered by stipends, excess baggage charges, phone bills, or internet usage fees.
Applicants who meet eligibility criteria must submit their applications online before October 10, 2023. The first round involves completing an online application along with three essay questions within ten days of starting the process. Successful candidates will proceed to Round 2 which includes an online English test.
Semi-finalists will attend an informational meeting alongside their parents and participate in individual interviews conducted by American Councils staff. They will also take standardized English tests and write proctored essays as part of this stage.
Finalists are notified along with alternates about preparation steps needed before departure including acceptance notification procedures and necessary documentation submission. Students should begin applying for or renewing their international passports upon accepting their place in the program; instructions on obtaining a U.S. visa will follow from FLEX representatives.
