The U.S. Embassy has issued a message for U.S. citizens regarding new travel requirements to the United Kingdom starting January 8, 2025. This update pertains to the UK's transition to a digital border system involving Electronic Travel Authorizations (ETA) and eVisas.
The UK has introduced an ETA system targeting visitors who do not require a visa for short stays or those without prior UK immigration status. Effective January 8, 2025, all U.S. citizens traveling to or transiting through the UK for tourism, family visits, business meetings, conferences, or short-term study of six months or less will need an ETA before their trip. Applications for ETAs have been open since November 27, 2024.
For further details on the ETA program, travelers are advised to visit the guidance on ETA.
Additionally, as of fall 2024, UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) is transitioning to a digital residency immigration system by replacing physical documents with an online record known as an eVisa. More information on eVisas can be found on the UK Visas and Immigration website.
