Department of State launches updated Smart Traveler Enrollment Program

On September 16, 2024, the Department of State introduced a new version of the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). U.S. citizens are encouraged to re-enroll at step.state.gov to continue receiving important alerts.

The updated STEP platform allows users to log in with a login.gov account to customize their subscriptions and receive country-specific email alerts during chosen timeframes. Users can enroll multiple trips or locations simultaneously and have the flexibility to modify subscriptions or unenroll as needed.

"Enrolling in STEP makes it easier for the nearest U.S embassy or consulate to contact you during an emergency and send you safety and security alerts," stated the Department of State. They urge all U.S. citizens traveling or living abroad to enroll or re-enroll to benefit from the new features.

To take action, individuals should visit step.state.gov to set preferences and ensure they continue receiving messages from the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate. It is also recommended that travelers encourage friends and family who are traveling or living internationally to enroll in STEP. Travelers have the option to sign up for alerts for individual trips or receive long-term alerts for specific countries where they or their loved ones are visiting or residing.

Additionally, following the State Department’s Bureau of Consular Affairs on social media (@travelgov) and connecting with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate is advised.
