The U.S. Embassy in Kabul has suspended its operations as of August 31, 2021. Despite the withdrawal of U.S. government personnel from Kabul, assistance will continue for U.S. citizens and their families remaining in Afghanistan. Citizens seeking help are advised to contact the Consular Affairs Afghanistan Call Center at 833-741-2777 or 606-260-4379, or via email at AfghanistanACS@state.gov.
The Embassy will maintain communication through the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), its website, Travel.State.Gov, and social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter. Consular services are still available outside Afghanistan, and individuals can locate the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate for scheduling services and visa appointments.
"The Department of State has no higher priority than the safety and security of U.S. citizens overseas." Citizens still in Afghanistan should enroll in STEP to receive security updates and ensure they can be located during emergencies.
Additional recommendations include reviewing personal security plans, staying aware of surroundings and local developments, maintaining a low profile, informing trusted persons about travel plans, making contingency plans that do not depend on U.S. government assistance, and monitoring local media.
