On September 16, 2024, the Department of State launched an updated version of the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). U.S. citizens are encouraged to re-enroll in the system at step.state.gov to continue receiving alerts.
The revised STEP platform now integrates with login.gov accounts, allowing users to customize their subscriptions and receive email alerts specific to countries during selected timeframes. Users can enroll multiple trips or locations simultaneously and have the flexibility to modify subscriptions or unenroll as needed.
According to the Department of State, "Enrolling in STEP makes it easier for the nearest U.S embassy or consulate to contact you during an emergency and send you safety and security alerts." The department strongly advises all U.S. citizens traveling or residing abroad to take advantage of this new functionality by enrolling or re-enrolling today.
To maintain communication with embassies and consulates, individuals should visit state.gov to set their preferences in the updated STEP system. Travelers are also encouraged to inform friends and family who travel or live internationally about enrolling in STEP. This allows travelers to sign up for alerts related to individual trips or receive long-term alerts for specific countries where they or their loved ones may be located.
Additionally, citizens are advised to follow the State Department’s Bureau of Consular Affairs on social media (@travelgov) along with their nearest U.S. embassy or consulate for further updates.
