The Department of State has issued an alert to U.S. citizens regarding the 2025 hurricane season, which will continue until November. These storms pose significant risks, including flash floods, strong winds, and dangerous surf conditions. The potential for inland flooding remains high even after a storm dissipates.

The Atlantic hurricane season began on June 1 and will last until November 30. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Climate Prediction Center, this year's season is expected to produce between 13 to 19 named storms, with 6 to 10 becoming hurricanes and 3 to 5 reaching major hurricane status (Category 3 or higher).

To prepare for these potential weather events, U.S. citizens are encouraged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for security updates. Travelers should also be aware that evacuation may not be possible for up to two days due to washed-out roads or debris obstructing access routes.

It is advised to have travel insurance as evacuation costs fall under personal responsibility according to U.S. law. An emergency kit containing essentials such as bottled water, medications, non-perishable food, a battery-powered radio, and vital documents should be organized in a waterproof container.
