William W. Popp Ambassador | U.S. Embassy in Uganda

Ambassador William W. Popp recently addressed students, faculty, and staff at Mengo Senior School in Nsambya. He praised the students for their determination and intelligence, highlighting the importance of education as a foundation for future success.

In his speech, Ambassador Popp emphasized the significance of hard work and seizing opportunities beyond formal education. He acknowledged that career paths can be unpredictable and encouraged students to remain open-minded about their futures.

Reflecting on his own journey from a small town in rural America to a diplomatic career spanning over 25 years, Ambassador Popp shared insights on preparing for the professional world. He stressed that "talent, hard work, and integrity matter more than connections or convenience" and that merit is crucial for building strong institutions.

He also discussed the changing nature of work due to advancements in artificial intelligence (AI). "AI is transforming industries all over the world," he said, noting that while some jobs may disappear, new opportunities requiring creativity and critical thinking will emerge.

Ambassador Popp advised students to embrace curiosity as a superpower in an evolving world. Citing historical examples like Henry Ford's revolutionizing of car manufacturing, he urged students to be willing to learn new skills even after formal schooling.

The ambassador recognized Stacey Mukiisa, a student who participated in the Pan-African Youth Leadership Program (PAYLP), encouraging others to explore similar opportunities through resources like the American Center in Nsambya and EducationUSA programs.

He concluded by thanking the school administration for hosting him and acknowledging Allie Stankewich, a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant at Mengo School. Ambassador Popp expressed support for young people who will shape the future and urged them to "be bold" and enjoy their journeys.
