Sailors from the U.S. 7th Fleet and the USS Blue Ridge participated in a community service project in Bondi, Australia, on May 28. The event was held in partnership with the U.S. Consulate General in Sydney, where 25 Navy Sailors prepared meals for those in need at Our Big Kitchen (OBK), a charity that supports vulnerable communities across Sydney.
Lt. Cmdr. Robert Hamer of the 7th Fleet expressed the significance of this opportunity: “I’ve participated in community relations events at every port visit this patrol, but this one was the most rewarding,” said Hamer. “This event not only strengthened our alliance with Australia, but also helped an organization that helps feed the most vulnerable.”
For many Sailors, including Logistics Specialist 1st Class Shawna-Kay McPherson from Blue Ridge, it was their first time volunteering overseas. McPherson noted the cultural importance of food: “Food is something that always brings people together,” she stated. “I enjoyed my experience today and I’m glad to have been a part of something like this. I’ll remember this for the rest of my life.”
Information Systems Technician 2nd Class Jerrel Griffin also highlighted the positive impact on international relations: “I had a blast helping out the food kitchen,” Griffin said. “It was honestly really eye-opening how they accepted the U.S. service members.”
U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Erika Olson joined the crew during their stop in Sydney and remarked on their efforts: “It’s great to be here today in Our Big Kitchen in Bondi with the crew of USS Blue Ridge,” Olson commented.
George Karounis, general manager of OBK, thanked them for their contribution: “With your efforts this afternoon, you’re going to feed people who probably have not eaten today,” he said.
The Blue Ridge and its embarked staff continue regular patrols throughout Indo-Pacific regions to deter aggression and strengthen alliances.
