As Greece enters the summer season, the U.S. Mission in Greece has issued a reminder to U.S. citizens about the increased risk of wildfires throughout the country. High temperatures, dry conditions, and strong winds are factors that may contribute to wildfire outbreaks.

The Greek Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection provides a Daily Fire Risk Map indicating fire danger levels by region. U.S. citizens are advised to remain vigilant, particularly when traveling to or residing in areas with elevated fire risk. Wildfires can cause disruptions such as road closures, power outages, and poor air quality. Areas near wildfires may face evacuation orders from Greek authorities.

Resources containing official information from Greek authorities about wildfires include Civil Protection Announcements, Civil Protection Forest Fire Self-Protection Guidelines, the Daily Fire Risk Map, and the Hellenic Fire Service.

Actions recommended for individuals include following all Greek government announcements and instructions, registering with Greece’s Emergency Communications Service for warning messages if not using a smartphone, calling 199 to report fires or 112 for emergency assistance, checking with airlines or Athens International Airport regarding service disruptions, carrying identity and travel documents at all times, having a contingency plan for emergencies by reviewing the Traveler’s Checklist, and enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive alerts.
