Botswana has become the first country to achieve Gold Tier status in the Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT) of HIV. This accomplishment is seen as a significant step towards achieving an AIDS-free generation and ending HIV as a public health threat by 2030.

The U.S. Government, through The U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), has played a key role in this achievement by partnering with the Government of Botswana. PEPFAR has been instrumental in supporting pregnant and breastfeeding women with HIV prevention, testing, care, and treatment services. Additionally, it has contributed to the capacity building of healthcare workers in the country.

"Botswana is a shining example," noted officials involved in the initiative, highlighting that even without a cure, substantial progress can be made against HIV/AIDS.
