Defense leaders discuss deepening US-Vietnam ties amid 30th anniversary

On May 31, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth met with Vietnam’s Minister of National Defence General Phan Van Giang. Both leaders acknowledged progress in the bilateral defense relationship as 2025 marks the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between their countries. Discussions included opportunities to enhance defense cooperation, focusing on defense trade and information sharing. They also reaffirmed that addressing war legacy issues remains a top priority for the Trump Administration.

Secretary Hegseth emphasized the importance the Trump Administration places on Vietnam’s role in maintaining peace and stability in Southeast Asia. He commended Vietnam’s rapid military modernization, noting it reflects Vietnam's dedication to regional security and a free and open Indo-Pacific.
