The World Bank has announced the approval of a $219.8 million credit from the International Development Association (IDA) to assist Mali in enhancing its road infrastructure. This funding, equivalent to approximately CFAF 133 billion, is aimed at improving climate-resilient connectivity along key road corridors in the country.

The initiative, known as the Road Infrastructure Connectivity and Resilience Improvement Program (Mali Nafa Soro Siraw, Mali-NSS), focuses on upgrading and rehabilitating the 137.7 km Diéma-Sandaré section of the Bamako-Dakar Northern Corridor. The project will also support the rehabilitation of related facilities along rural roads in Nioro and Kayes regions, adjacent to the Diéma-Sandaré area. Additionally, it seeks to strengthen national road agencies through capacity building and investments in public institutions.

"The rehabilitation of the deteriorated sections will improve the resilience of the national road network, given the critical importance of the Bamako – Dakar Corridor for connectivity," stated Clara de Sousa, World Bank Country Director for Mali. "With this new operation, better, safer, and climate-resilient road infrastructure will improve access to education, healthcare, and markets. They will also enable access to economic opportunities, especially for women and girls.”

This project is expected to indirectly benefit around one million people residing within 150 km of these roads. Direct beneficiaries include road users and nearby populations who will experience upgraded and maintained roads. Furthermore, it aims to decrease travel times and transport costs for those utilizing these routes.
