Siemens Mobility has completed the modernization of the Kijfhoek freight railyard for ProRail B.V. The facility is now fully operational with a new automated yard management system. As the largest freight rail yard in the Netherlands, Kijfhoek connects the Port of Rotterdam with major European industrial centers. The project, which cost €110 million and was awarded in 2021, was finished in May this year.
Helga Cuijpers, Regional Director Randstad South Region at ProRail, stated: "The facility now in full operations marks an important milestone. Now fully renewed, our freight yard facility near Rotterdam is not only fast and efficient, it also strengthens its position as key freight hub connecting the port of Rotterdam with other European industrial centers. We thank Siemens Mobility for the works done and the cooperation with the ‘best for project’ approach."
Jens Nordmann, Head of Mainline at Siemens Mobility, commented: “The modernization of Kijfhoek demonstrates how intelligent automation transforms rail freight operations. By implementing our advanced Trackguard Cargo MSR32 system, we are significantly enhancing operational efficiency and thus setting new standards for sustainable freight transport in Europe. This project exemplifies our commitment to delivering solutions that make cargo movement faster, more efficient, and more reliable. We're proud to strengthen our long-standing partnership with ProRail B.V. and contribute to the Netherlands' position as a key European logistics hub.”
The modernization includes Siemens Mobility's Trackguard Cargo MSR32 system that provides comprehensive yard automation. It features route and speed control units, retarders, propelling systems, and radio-based integration for locomotive control. This solution optimizes operations from train arrival through classification to departure while improving safety and efficiency.
Kijfhoek spans 50 hectares southeast of Rotterdam and is supported by a 15-year maintenance service agreement ensuring continued operational excellence. The modernization reinforces its role as a crucial logistics hub between Rotterdam's port and European industrial centers.
