Julie Chung Ambassador | U.S. Embassy in Sri Lanka

May 30, 2025

The U.S. Embassy has launched the USBus, a Mobile American Space, at the University of Kelaniya in Sri Lanka. Ambassador Chung highlighted the significance of this initiative, stating that it is "a milestone moment in our shared journey to bring knowledge, opportunity, and inspiration directly to young people across Sri Lanka." The launch is part of the America250 campaign celebrating the 250th anniversary of American independence.

The USBus aims to empower youth by providing access to educational resources and opportunities regardless of location. Ambassador Chung emphasized that "access to opportunity should never depend on your postal code." The initiative will include visits to various universities and community hubs throughout Sri Lanka over the next 18 months.

The program includes STEM sessions led by Fulbright Researcher Olivia Mitchell, English language instruction from fellows Judith and Kevin, entrepreneurship bootcamps, and EducationUSA advising sessions. Students will also have access to interactive activities such as virtual reality experiences and 3D printing demonstrations.

Ambassador Chung expressed gratitude for partnerships with organizations like Sarvodaya Fusion and highlighted the role of English Language Fellows, Fulbright scholars, EducationUSA advisors, and Embassy officers in bringing this initiative to life.

In addition to mobile programming, the USBus complements existing American Spaces in Colombo, Kandy, Matara, Jaffna, and Batticaloa. These spaces provide language development, digital literacy training, cultural programming, and leadership workshops.

Ambassador Chung encouraged students to engage with the USBus project by scanning a QR code available at its booth for more information on upcoming stops and programs. The goal is to inspire curiosity and confidence among Sri Lankan youth as they build a more prosperous future with support from the United States.

"Together," said Ambassador Chung, "we can build a more resilient, prosperous, and opportunity-rich Sri Lanka—and we’re proud that the United States can be your partner in that journey."
