Technocamps, a program based at Swansea University with hubs across Wales, has been recognized for its efforts to make STEM education more inclusive. The organization received accolades at the SheCanCode STEM Educator Awards for inspiring women and girls to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
Funded by the Welsh Government, Technocamps extends its influence beyond traditional classrooms. It aims to create pathways for learners at various stages of their education or career, focusing on engaging young people who might otherwise disengage from STEM fields. This mission particularly targets increasing female participation through initiatives like the GiST Cymru programme.
The GiST Cymru programme collaborates with external partners to provide diverse activities that offer girls access to role models and hands-on experiences in STEM. The programme has supported workshops for organizations such as CyberFirst and Motorsport UK.
An annual highlight is Technocamps' International Women’s Day Gala. This event celebrates women's achievements in STEM and draws over 200 guests from across Wales and beyond. It serves as a platform to showcase accomplishments, share stories, and foster a community committed to gender equality in STEM fields.
Professor Faron Moller, Director of Technocamps, expressed gratitude for the recognition: "Technocamps embraces the role that universities, by working together, can play in championing inclusion in STEM at a national level. I am grateful that our efforts over the last 20 years have been recognised at the SheCanCode STEM Educator Awards."
Luke Clement, Operations Manager at Technocamps, also commented: “We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who voted and supported us—your encouragement helps us continue paving the way for a more inclusive and inspiring future for women in STEM. We’re especially thrilled to see the tireless dedication and legacy of our Patron, Beti Williams, celebrated.”
Beti Williams was honored with the STEM Role Model Award. She stated: “I am honoured to receive this award, and I am delighted that the work of the Technocamps team throughout Wales has also been acknowledged.”
