Ellie Goulding, singer-songwriter and recent UN Global Environmental Ambassador, will perform at the Right Here, Right Now Global Climate Concert on June 6 at New Theatre, Oxford. The concert is hosted by United Nations Human Rights and the University of Oxford to draw attention to the human rights implications of the climate crisis.
The concert is part of a series of climate-focused events in Oxford until June 8. These include photography exhibitions, interactive workshops, public lectures, and panel discussions aimed at fostering a global movement for climate justice rooted in human rights.
Among the events are:
- "Photography 4 Humanity: A Lens on Climate Justice" from May 30 to June 8 at Weston Library and Fusion Arts. This exhibition captures the human impact of climate change through photography. An official dedication is scheduled for June 4 with Volker Türk, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and Professor Irene Tracey from the University of Oxford.
- "A Conversation with Elif Shafak and Jonny Thomson on Nature and Humans: Connectedness, conflicts and rights" on June 2 features discussions by author Elif Shafak and philosopher Jonny Thomson about nature's relationship with humans.
- The Right Here, Right Now 2025 Launch Event on June 4 at Sheldonian Theatre includes speeches by Professor Irene Tracey and Volker Türk. It will feature panels with experts like COP26 president Lord Alok Sharma and activist Vanessa Nakate.
- "Party for the Planet" on June 5 celebrates World Environment Day with music, DJ sets, food, drinks, speakers, and displays in Broad Street.
- "Climate Justice: Museum Late Night" on June 6 offers activities focused on shaping a better future for the planet at the Museum of Natural History and Pitt Rivers. Dr Friederike Otto will speak about her book "Climate Injustice," while filmmaker Dr Itandehui Jansen presents her film "Itu Ninu."
The Right Here, Right Now Global Climate Concert aims to raise awareness about climate-related human rights issues. Proceeds support United Nations Human Rights' initiatives and MusiCares' fund for musicians affected by climate change.
Other events include a family workshop titled "Museum of Climate Hope Living Nature" on June 7 at Oxford’s Botanic Gardens. The Summit Hub also offers online discussions about deliberative democracy in climate policy development and student roles in addressing climate challenges through events organized by the Oxford Student Union.
