The U.S. Department of State, in collaboration with ESPNW, is seeking candidates for the 2025 Global Sport Mentoring Program (GSMP) through Mission Vietnam. This initiative aims to enhance sports opportunities for women and girls globally by providing a platform for creating action plans that promote safe and fair competition. The program will run from September 27 to November 6, 2025, involving approximately 15 international participants.
Since its inception in 2012, the GSMP has established itself as a leading public-private partnership with ESPN/espnW. It pairs emerging female leaders from various sectors such as National Olympic Committees and Ministries of Sport with senior executives at top U.S. sports organizations for an immersive five-week mentorship experience. Notable American mentor organizations include the Big East Conference, ESPN, Monumental Sports and Entertainment, the NFL's Green Bay Packers, the NHL, NCAA, New Balance, United States Tennis Association, and several Division 1 universities.
Participants benefit from leadership development training, hands-on mentoring sessions, and networking opportunities like the espnW Summit. The program culminates in presentations of action plans developed during their time in the U.S., with continued support from mentors upon returning home.
"The GSMP provides emerging leaders with opportunities to develop management skills," allowing them to contribute significantly to economic growth while gaining insights into various aspects of the U.S. sports industry.
Candidates must be women aged between 25 and 45 involved in sectors such as sports management or coaching and should be fluent in English. They must also demonstrate leadership potential within their organizations and commit to sharing knowledge within their communities.
Pre-departure orientation conducted by the Public Diplomacy Section will prepare participants by reinforcing connections to U.S. foreign policy goals on human rights and inclusion. Upon return, participants can apply for grants to implement their action plans focusing on community needs.
