The Department of State has issued an alert to U.S. citizens regarding the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, which is set to begin on June 1 and last until November 30. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Climate Prediction Center forecasts that this year's season will see between 13-19 named storms, 6-10 hurricanes, and 3-5 major hurricanes classified as Category 3 or higher.

NOAA and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) have emphasized the importance of preparation, stating that a single hurricane can significantly disrupt lives. They advise individuals to take necessary precautions now.

To prepare for the hurricane season, U.S. citizens are encouraged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for security updates. This is particularly recommended for those planning international travel. The Department of State warns that during a hurricane, departure from affected areas may be delayed by up to 48 hours or more due to road blockages and other hazards.

Travel insurance is advised to cover unforeseen expenses, including potential evacuation costs from overseas locations. The U.S. Department of State may coordinate with commercial airlines for evacuations but notes that any related costs will be borne by individuals.

Citizens are urged to assemble a kit containing essential items such as bottled water, medications, non-perishable food, a battery-powered radio, and important documents like passports in a waterproof container.

Additional preparedness tips are available on FEMA's website at ready.gov/hurricanes and NOAA's site at nhc.noaa.gov/prepare/ready.php.

Staying informed about weather developments through local media and the National Hurricane Center is crucial. Citizens should also keep their friends and family informed about their whereabouts and maintain communication with tour operators, hotel staff, and local officials for any evacuation instructions during emergencies.

For assistance during emergencies in Barbados, U.S. citizens can contact the U.S. Embassy Bridgetown at Wildey Business Park or reach out via phone at 1-246-227-4000 for emergencies or email BridgetownACS@state.gov for non-emergency inquiries.
