ANZ and the Energy Efficiency Council (EEC) have published a new report offering practical guidance for Australians to enhance energy efficiency in their homes. The report, titled "Putting energy efficiency to work at home," is the final part of the Forgotten Fuel series, which examines how businesses and households can leverage energy efficiency to reduce emissions, save money, and improve health.

The document suggests immediate and long-term actions for Australian renters and homeowners to increase energy efficiency and cut costs. It highlights often overlooked changes that can significantly decrease carbon emissions and reduce household energy bills.

Maile Carnegie, ANZ Group Executive Australia Retail, expressed optimism about the report's impact: “We’re hopeful our final Forgotten Fuels report will empower Australians to make simple changes that contribute to a big difference. Whether you’re a homeowner or renter, there’s no action too small in the path to cost reduction and improved comfort in your home."

Carnegie added that all Australians could enhance their energy efficiency through choices like using appliances during off-peak times or investing in heat pumps.

Energy Efficiency Council CEO Luke Menzel commented on the importance of understanding available options: “Energy is a significant outgoing for many households, but the good news is there are plenty of things families can do to drive down their bills." He emphasized that this partnership with ANZ aims to provide crucial information when it is most needed by families.

The report offers several recommendations:

- Thermal efficiency improvements such as insulation can lower heating and cooling costs by 45%. Sealing gaps around doors or walls also enhances comfort while reducing expenses.

- Simple behavior changes like using air conditioners in fan mode or operating washing machines during solar activity or off-peak tariffs can lead to notable savings.

- Smart controls enable automation and remote control of devices. For instance, smart appliances may be scheduled for operation during cheaper electricity periods.

Additionally, home energy assessments will soon be available under an Australian Government trial involving select ANZ customers through the Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme (NatHERS). Eligible customers applying for mortgage refinancing or top-ups may receive free home energy ratings identifying potential efficiencies.

The Forgotten Fuels series exemplifies ANZ's commitment outlined in its five-year Climate and Environment Strategy towards assisting customers amid environmental shifts.
