DBS Bank, the Singapore Manufacturing Federation (SMF), Ernst & Young LLP (EY), and Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) have collaborated to launch the "Decarbonisation Playbook: A Practical Guide for Manufacturers to a Low-Carbon Future." Supported by Enterprise Singapore and SkillsFuture Singapore, this initiative marks Singapore's first decarbonisation playbook tailored for the manufacturing sector. The playbook aims to assist over 5,000 local manufacturers in their transition towards net zero emissions.
The guide targets two primary audiences: manufacturers across Singapore and 1,600 learners from NYP’s educational programs. It seeks to equip businesses and future professionals with tools for effective climate action. According to a survey involving more than 70 manufacturers, many companies are still in the early stages of their sustainability journey, highlighting the need for practical support.
In response, DBS and SMF partnered with EY and NYP to create the playbook based on industry feedback and expert insights. "Meaningful decarbonisation starts with practical, real-world support," said Chen Ze Ling of DBS. The playbook introduces the "DECARB" framework, a step-by-step model designed to help companies address emissions and develop sustainable practices.
Clara Kwan of SMF emphasized that the playbook addresses challenges faced by manufacturers such as limited resources and regulatory pressures. Praveen Tekchandani from EY highlighted that the playbook offers actionable tools by integrating science-based strategies with industry-specific solutions.
To further its impact, NYP will incorporate the playbook into its educational curricula. Dr. Graham Ng of NYP stated that this integration will help students and industry partners tackle sustainability challenges effectively.
Workshops co-organized by DBS, SMF, EY, and NYP will introduce manufacturers to the playbook's concepts through practical sessions. This effort complements other initiatives like DBS’ ESG Ready Programme and SMF’s Chief Sustainability Officer-as-a-Service.
