The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a Level 2 Travel Health Notice concerning Clade I Mpox in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and neighboring countries. The notice advises travelers to take specific precautions to minimize risk.
Travelers are advised to wash their hands frequently with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer, particularly before eating, touching their face, or after using the bathroom. They should avoid close contact with sick individuals, especially those with skin or genital lesions. Contact with dead or live wild animals, such as rodents and non-human primates, should also be avoided. Additionally, travelers are cautioned against consuming or preparing bushmeat or using products derived from wild animals.
The CDC states that while the risk to the general public is low, individuals who develop new unexplained skin rashes accompanied by fever and chills should seek medical care immediately and avoid contact with others. It is recommended to call ahead before visiting a healthcare facility when possible.
Individuals suspected of having Mpox are advised to delay travel by public transportation until cleared by healthcare professionals or public health officials.
