On September 16, 2024, the Department of State introduced a new version of the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). U.S. citizens are encouraged to re-enroll in this updated system at step.state.gov to continue receiving alerts.
The enhanced STEP platform now allows users to employ a login.gov account for customizing subscriptions and receiving country-specific email alerts within chosen timeframes. It also offers the capability to enroll multiple trips or locations simultaneously and provides options to modify subscriptions or unenroll as needed.
Enrolling in STEP facilitates communication between travelers and the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate during emergencies, ensuring that safety and security alerts are promptly received. The Department of State strongly advises all U.S. citizens traveling or residing abroad to enroll or re-enroll immediately to benefit from these new features.
To maintain access to important updates, individuals should visit state.gov to set their preferences within the updated STEP system. This will ensure they continue receiving relevant alerts and messages from nearby U.S. embassies or consulates.
Additionally, it is recommended that friends and family members who travel internationally also enroll in STEP. Travelers have the option to sign up for alerts specific to individual trips or receive long-term notifications for countries where they or their loved ones may be visiting or living.
For further information and updates, follow the State Department’s Bureau of Consular Affairs on social media (@travelgov) as well as any nearby U.S. embassy or consulate.
